In a week that generated headlines such as “FTSE suffers worst day in three months” and “Markets drop as Sunak’s plan falls flat” there were always going to be more losers than winners. The movements this week have impacted our competition by giving us a new leader. With only three trading days left until the close of the contest this is just the kind of finale that those of us trailing will enjoy.
Only 18 of our 100 shares made gains this week and Fresnillo, a long time favourite fell dramatically after it announced annual silver and gold production would be at the lower end of an already reduced target range.
Shares in hospitality and leisure firms were particularly dented.
Poorest performers of the week were:-
International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (-14.4%), Rolls Royce Holdings Plc (-14.1%), Fresnillo (-11.7%), EasyJet plc (-9.9%), Smiths Group Plc (-9.7%).
Best performing shares were Rightmove plc (+11.2%), Pearson plc (+10.7%), British American Tobacco plc (5.7%), Flutter Entertainment (+3.1%), Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (+2.8%)
So Alexander Pryde, despite also being a big loser this week, now leads the competition for the first time albeit with less than £1100 of an advantage. The previous top three are still in close pursuit but long time leader Hansen Low was the poorest performer of the week and is now in third place. Sammy’s Granny is back at number five but maybe has too much ground to make up. Best performance of the week was GeoJen with a 2.7% gain.
At the foot the challenge for the wooden spoon is even hotter. Robin Grant is now in line for the consolation bottle of malt whisky but he is only £119 behind Beers Drunk.
