2020 08 Speaker - St Johns Ambulance Cadet

Beth Ashcroft talked about her trip to South Africa

Rotary Club of Midhurst & Petworth

                      Monday 10th August 2020 – 6 – 6.30pm

Speaker – Beth Ashcroft - St John's Ambulance

International Cadet Camp, Cape Town, South Africa

The Rotary Club donated towards the costs of Beth’s January 2020 above trip.   She was pleased to visit our Club on Zoom to give a presentation about her experience and she was profuse in her thanks to the Club for its contribution which enabled her to attend.

She reported what a great experience she had and that she met people from all over the world and from different walks of life.  It seems that she made the most of it and certainly grasped, in her own words, the opportunity of a lifetime.

She was one of 41 cadets from England and Northern Ireland.  In total there were 300 cadets from 11 counties.

Beth presented her talk very well and illustrated it throughout with some lovely colourful photographs.   She was in South Africa for 10 days and in between a Welcome Meal and Farewell Dinner, both attended by 300 plus, Beth enjoyed:

 Beach visit

Safari

Canoeing

Wine Farm (all underage – so no samples!)

Cultural evening with Braai.

African Drumming

City Tour

Table Mountain

Robben Island

The group also got involved with help on a community project at a local primary School including clearance of the sports fields and reading to the children.      All agreed what a well worthwhile exercise that was and very much the sort of thing all Rotarians want to support.

Beth and her fellow cadets from England and Northern Ireland did well in the First Aid Competition which was held towards the end of the trip.   Overall, they were third (behind South Africa and New Zealand) out of the 11 teams.

I thanked Beth for such an enjoyable talk and said that the Club was delighted to have been able to be a small part in helping her complete a fantastic tour.   She summed up the many benefits it brought - not just a wonderful expedition to South Africa, but that the experience has gained her more confidence, independence, and a belief in her abilities.

Beth gave us such a feel for the country and Cape Town in happier times which, as a Club, we are able to contrast against the COVID-19 lockdown era currently being experienced there as we learned last month on Zoom from the president of a Rotary Club in Cape Town.
