Week 3 of the FTSE 100 competition has created a new leader in Hansen Low.  The top eight are still the same entrants however with early leader Sammy’s Granny dropping to sixth.  Biggest mover this week was Brian Merrett making up 41 places!  McTart showed a massive 9.4% gain on the week. At the wrong end the same 12 entrants retain the last dozen spots.

Overall it was a better week on the FTSE 100 up 3.2% on the week in closing at 6920.30 on Friday.  Mining shares especially with interests in gold still the most successful as the value of gold increases.

AstraZeneca had pushed up the FTSE 100 through the week on optimism over the development of its COVID-19 vaccine.

Global miner Rio Tinto was among the top boosts to the FTSE 100 after posting stronger second-quarter iron ore shipments and flagging improving Chinese demand for the steelmaking ingredient.

Improving Chinese demand has pushed up metal prices, while weakness in the pound has helped local resource exporters. Miner Fresnillo Plc was the best weekly performer on the FTSE 100, adding 16.1%%. The next of the ten best movers of the week were Flutter Entertainment (+9.5%), Johnson Matthey plc (+9.1%), SSE plc (+8.7%), Smith & Nephew (+8.2%), BHP Group plc (+8.1%), AstraZenica (+8.0%), Int Capital Group (+7.5%), Himka Pharmaceuticals (7.3%) and Rio Tinto plc (+7.0%)

22 shares show losses – the poorest being Burberry Group (-5.6%), British American Tobacco – 3.2%), Meggitt (-2.5%) and Taylor Wimpey plc (-2.3%).

The pdf chart this week shows report of movements on the week and movements since the starting price was set. Still a long way to go and a very interesting and fluid market.
