Six Portishead / Pill community groups are being given a much needed helping hand after a 150 day partnership between Portishead Rotary Club and Sainsbury's, Portishead.  Last year (2019) Sainsbury's nationally celebrated 150 years in business and to mark this milestone they teamed up with the Rotary Club of Portishead for a 150 day charity partnership in running activities and fundraising for six local causes.  This ran from the 26th May until the 23rd of October.

Both Sainsbury’s and Portishead Rotary Club would to thank the many shoppers for being so generous in contributing nearly £3,500 during the 150 days.

Over the 150 days staff from Sainsbury's joined the Rotary Club in numerous activities and fundraising.  The local charities and groups to benefit are  - The Benjamin Pritchard Foundation  -  Penny Brohn UK  -  Mental Health Awareness Portishead (MHAP) -  Portishead Christmas Lights -   Portishead in Bloom and the Portishead Dementia Carers Group

The money will help support these groups, particularly at these challenging times, to continue and develop their initiatives, helping those less fortunate than others and giving colour and pleasure around the town.

One example of the joint activities was supporting the Portishead Lighthouse Dementia Carers Group which meets on the fourth Tuesday each month (not currently due to the Coronavirus situation) at St. Nicholas Church in Nore Road from 1030 - 1230 and provides carers of people living with dementia the opportunity to talk with people in similar situations, offering respite and comfort.  The group also caters for people with dementia as skilled staff lead activities including skittles, board and card games, arts and crafts etc.  Sainsbury's volunteer employees joined in and helped organise these fun and inclusive games.  Vicky Preston, group leader said 'the help and support from both parties was so valued by us all, to see the smiling faces from everyone was a joy and such a pleasure'.

Past President of the Rotary Club John Sleight said 'we were delighted to have been chosen to partner our local Sainsbury's in their celebration and must thank the local community for all their support during the 150 days in raising such a fantastic sum of money, thank you'.  Elaine Beaverstock, Public Relations Ambassador for Sainsbury's said 'We never dreamt that the partnership would bring such fun and pleasure and we were delighted to help our local community and charity groups in raising their profile and their funds'.
