For their first meeting of the new year, Irvine Seagate Rotary had an interesting and entertaining talk on driving and road safety, from David Johnston of Kilmarnock Rotary. David is a former Police Divisional Commander, and now a Justice of the Peace, who spent most of his police career in the Traffic Division.
Having a driving licence is a privilege, not a right, and there are over 70 offences that can lead to the loss of a licence. Hopefully, remembering this will cause us to think of our responsibilities to other road users and encourage safer driving and vehicle maintenance. David outlined a number of these offences, and noted for example that police radar guns are accurate up to 1 mile, and using a handheld phone will lead to 6 points and a minimum £200 fine. As was to be expected, everyone had questions and opinions, and eventually a Vote of Thanks was proposed by Jim Anderson.
