Vampire Runs And Transporting Breast Milk

Our members don't only support our community through activities under the aegis of Rotary, but also dedicate their own personal time.

Club member Ken Smith is a dedicated biker who volunteers to deliver emergency blood supplies to hospitals, and human breast milk too.  He has given us this update on what the Essex Bloodrunners have been up to recently.

  • Total runs: 2018 - 1,883
  • Total runs: Dec 2019- Sept 2019 – 1,569

“Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) used the blood we carry for them on 21 occasions, something they regard as life-changing.  The Total Runs includes our regular blood runs to nine Essex hospitals, the daily servicing of EHAAT at their air bases, extra runs for EHAAT (including Vampire Runs!) and milk runs, transporting donated breast milk to the Hearts Bank in Harpenden and, from there, to hospital infant Intensive Care Units”.

“We will clearly exceed the 2018 total in 2019,” says Ken. “ The Vampire Runs are transporting fresh supplies to EHAAT from Harlow hospital where they have used our regular supply on call-out.  All this done with just 50 volunteers!

“I have carried out eleven runs in September alone, the most being three in a one-night rota.”
