Community Award 2019
The Community Award is an annual Award from Chelwood Bridge Rotary Club.
Persons nominated by Parish Councils for this award must have made a significant voluntary contribution to the community - there are no age restrictions. Examples may include voluntary youth work, caring for the less able, service on committees, or creating and delivering community initiatives. Any nominee should be recognised as someone who has undertaken something of real benefit for the community or groups/individuals within it.
All nominees receive a signed "Certificate of Recognition" and an engraved Rose Bowl is presented at a Rotary dinner to the successful candidate, selected by the Rotary committee.
In 2018 there were 9 nominations and this year there were 14 nominations from 12 Parish Councils.
The successful nominee this year Mr Peter Sherborne was proposed by Julie Glynn - Chair of Chelwood Parish Council.
Pete is now in his 70's. He was born in Chelwood and has lived there all of his life. He is married to Ann and has two children and three grandchildren. Pete’s grandfather lived and farmed in the village.
Pete farms at Glebe Farm in the middle of the village. For many years he and Ann were dairy farmers but now have beef cattle. In the early years he was Chair of the Young Farmers and has always been involved with the Mendip Ploughing Society and is a committee member. He is also the representative for Somerset of the Ferguson Tractor Heritage Club.
Pete has served on the Parish Council for an amazing fifty five years only stepping down this May after decades of service to the community. He was Chair of the Parish Council for 33 of those years. We believe he never missed a single meeting!
In addition to this Pete has served on the village hall committee for many years during which time he was also the Chair. He has also run the Whist Club for fifteen years.
He has been the “go to” man in the village not just because he was the Chair of the PC but because he would always help anyone for anything. He has always had a particular soft spot for the most vulnerable in and around Chelwood and has provided a lot of support to farming colleagues as they have become older and lost dear ones.
The same goes for his wife Ann who is the only Church Warden and who has also served on the village hall committee for decades. In a small village people like Pete are invaluable. He has enormously strong community values which the village has relied upon and benefited from for a very long time.
The Chelwood Bridge Rotary Community Award was presented on 19th November to recognise Pete for his lifetime voluntary devotion to the Chelwood community and to celebrate his service on the Parish Council from which he has just retired. Many congratulations Pete.
