The final of the District 1260 Minor Sports tournament was played at The Globe Codicote on the evening of Thursday 7th November between two time finalists Brookmans Park and first time finalists Ampthill.
Both clubs were able to field teams of 12 which allowed 6 different games to be played, each in pairs, at the same time.
Added to the traditional pub games of darts, dominoes, cribbage and shove h’penny were Connect 4 and Jenga.
Over the evening a total of 21 individual games were played with Brookmans Park roaring into an early lead winning 9 of the opening 12 games. There followed a series of close games and whilst Brookmans Park had a clean sweep at darts others were much closer affairs.
However despite their best efforts Ampthill were unable to fully close the gap with Brookmans Park eventually victorious 14 games to 7 thus becoming thoroughly deserving Minor Sports champions at their third attempt.
As always the evening was played in the finest Rotary spirit throughout with both Captains speaking very well of their opponents and pride in their respective team performances.
It was also pleasing to report that there were no failures in the testing for performance enhancing drugs although the occasional alcoholic beverage may not have helped steady the hands when playing Jenga.
The evening was overseen by retiring Minor Sports organisers Karen and Andrew Clarke from Bedford Park and new organiser Ian Begg from Stevenage Grange.
The new season of Minor Sports has already started with Brookmans Park planning to defend their crown against 17 other clubs.
