Prestwick Rotarians hear about Macmillan Cancer Support

Prestwick Rotarians and guests were made aware of the wide-ranging work done by Macmillan Cancer Support, by way of an excellent talk from West of Scotland Fundraising Manager, Michelle Jeffcott.

Michelle presented the facts in a very effective, forthright manner, stating that there are many treatments, to combat over 200 cancers, but as yet no cure. Every day 40 people in the West of Scotland are told they have cancer. By the year 2020, almost half of all Scots will get cancer in their lifetime, but only 38% of these people will die from it.

Macmillan nurses and support staff are there to help, with over 300 professional staff in Scotland, 40 of whom are in Ayrshire. Macmillan has a free, and confidential, support helpline, with over 340 calls made from Ayrshire last year. Also, support classes, for all affected, are run from The Citadel in Ayr, and it is estimated that one cancer diagnosis impacts on average, 44 other people.

Michelle Jeffcott was looking for a rewarding job in the charity sector. She has certainly found it, by joining Macmillan. A lively, serious discussion followed Michelle's talk.

Andrew Mathieson gave Michelle a well-deserved vote of thanks for making us all more aware of the extensive, and worthwhile, work being done by Macmillan Cancer Support. Andrew and Michelle are shown in the supporting photograph.
