Action on Hearing Loss - 16/09/19

Weekly Press Report

Seagate Rotary’s speaker on Monday was Lois Paton from Action on Hearing Loss Scotland.  The charity provides many services and advice for people with hearing loss, and also funds research .  In the UK 1 in 6 people have hearing problems of varying degrees, from mild impairment to total deafness, and Lois is at present visiting schools in Ayrshire explaining to young people the importance of preventing the damage that excessively loud noise can cause.

As a practical example, the charity hands out ear plugs at music festivals, both as protection and to raise awareness of the potential problem.  Hearing loss can cause feelings of social isolation and exclusion, but much can be alleviated by proper hearing aids.  The first point of call is the GP, who can test hearing and refer people on to the appropriate clinic.

There were questions and comment, and a Vote of Thanks was proposed by Billy Dickson.
