A Travelogue of Greece 12/08/19

Weekly Press Report

President Ian Dickson entertained Seagate Rotary on Monday with his holiday slides from the Isle of Lefkada and the Peleponnese peninsula in Greece.

This was a potted history lesson of the ancient Greeks, Byzantynes and others from the area, taking in the ruins of Olympia, the temple of Appolo, Mystras, Sparta and Messini.  Covering subjects as diverse as church frescos and architecture, sea battles and the old Greek calendar, all was explained with verbatim translations from the ancient inscriptions and more modern historic plaques.

The period covered was from 1200 BCE to the second World War.  As was to be expected from the classical apiarist, there were included pictures of the beehives in the olive groves.  A Vote of Thanks was proposed by David Cousar, recounting his sailing experiences in the same area and the ancient Greek delights of the quayside tavernas.
