Watford help Clean up their town

According to Plastic Oceans UK, we manufacture over 300 million tonnes of plastic every single year. That is the equivalent to the weight of the entire adult population of the planet.  As a result oceans and rivers are literary becoming hostile and posing a constant threat to the its wildlife habitat.

On Saturday 8th June, Clubs across Great Britain and Ireland organised local groups consisting of Club members and volunteers to pick up Plastics and General Litter from parks, beaches and rivers as part of the Rotary Great Britain and Ireland (RGBI) mass beach and river clean day.

Members from Watford Rotary Club supported the initiative went to work in Cassiobury Park.  Among those taking Part was Councillor Rabi Martins who serves as Assistant District Governor for the organisation , who said  “ The public are becoming more and more aware of the damage that plastic which ends up in our  seas and rivers, causes to our environment and wildlife. Only the other day I saw plastics in our town centre pond next to a couple of ducks and their young ones.  One of them could easily have died as a result.  I am pleased that RGBI chose to dedicate a day when our clubs across the country were encouraged to join in on this war on plastics pollution.  By mobilising clubs in this way I hope we highlighted Rotary’s commitment to the environment and also encouraged the public to be dispose of their litter in a sensible and responsible manner. Another member of the clean up party, past Club President Fiona Daly was taken by how clean Cassiobury Park was even though there were hundreds of people supporting the Race for Life event  that was on at the time. This is a great credit to Veolia staff who maintain the park.

Rabi concluded “ Rotary needs new members and supporters and I hope this initiative will encourage people to take an interest in and support Rotary in Beds, Herts and Bucks ”
