Kirkcudbright Academy Spell Bee 2019
SPELL IT OUT!
Recently the Old School Hall at Kirkcudbright Academy hosted the third annual Spelling Bee for pupils from the Junior Section of the school. The competition was once again sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright and the MC for the event, Rotarian Gavin Scott, welcomed all present to the impressive venue. Through four closely contested rounds seven participants tackled the rigours of spelling the words announced to them, with rounds 1 and 2 featuring written responses. The challenge to excel was evident when the five strongest spellers commenced round 3, each requiring to stand and to spell their word whilst facing the very attentive audience. An element of tension was present throughout and, indeed, the proverbial pin would have been heard to drop as the competition continued until Sandy Ross was declared the eventual winner in round 4. Rotary Club President, Gordon Cowan, presented the winner’s shield and a book token to Sandy, with all pupils receiving a participation certificate. Gavin Scott thanked the pupils for taking part and, in his closing remarks, drew particular attention to the support and the encouragement given to the participants by the principal teacher of Languages & Social Sciences at the Academy, Mrs MacDougall, and as regards also in respect of her help with the organisation of the competition.
