Fifty years a journalist

Judith Phillips is a longstanding friend of Llandudno Rotary and so it was a capacity crowd of 30 members, friends and visitors who came to Cae Mor Hotel, Llandudno on Tuesday 19th March to hear Judith talk about her 50+ years in journalism

Judith worked for some time with a London PR agency but most of her career has been with North Wales Weekly News and the Daily Post and Judith still writes a weekly column for each paper

Judith began as an apprentice and took us through a selection of her more bizarre experiences, which included interviewing a widow across the open coffin (the deceased was the topic of the interview), an encounter with Paul McCartney minus his trousers (don’t ask, Judith said – but we did!), driving a Challenger tank, being introduced to the Duke of Edinburgh as a “hottie” (sadly no footage survives) and flying an RAF Hercules plane. Archbishop Runcie and Bank of England Governor Mervyn King also had walk-on parts in this rolling drama.

We were also pleased to welcome Rtn. Simon Wheeler and his wife Sandra; Simon is this year’s President of Cheltenham Rotary. Paul and Marie of North Wales Business Energy also paid us another welcome visit. All in all, a night that buzzed!

One especially intrigued listener was our guest 17-year old Amy

Elverstone who starts a degree course in journalism at Moores University this September. We’ve already booked Amy to talk to us about her 50 years in journalism, so, it’s “watch this space”, to employ a classic journo teaser

Blood Bikes - Wales

back Blood Bikes Wales is the eye-catching name for a group of dedicated volunteers who come together as a registered charity to transport blood and other urgently needed medical material from one NHS base in Wales to another
