On Monday, the speaker at Irvine Seagate Rotary was John MacLeod from Disaster Aid UK. Disaster Aid is a Rotary founded charity that provides humanitarian relief after major natural disasters such as tsunamis, hurricanes and flooding.
They supply a basic aid box, which costs £200, and includes items such as cooking equipment, tools and water purification. Volunteers from the charity assess the conditions on the ground and coordinate relief efforts according to local needs. If necessary they can organise local purchase of building materials to assist in rebuilding homes. In other areas they may provide tented temporary accommodation.
Founded in the UK 40 years ago, the charity has spread internationally from Canada and Brazil to India and New Zealand and many other countries. More details can be found on their website, disasteraiduk.org. John answered questions, and a Vote of Thanks was proposed by Billy Dickson.
Next Monday is Seagate’s annual Nicht wi’ Burns, and the Sportsmen’s Dinner is on 22 February.
