Llandudno Rotary rings in the New Year

At their first meeting of the new year, 18 Rotarians and friends dined at the Cae Mor Hotel, Llandudno, prior to receiving an address from retired Methodist preacher and friend of the Club, Malcolm Weatherby

Malcolm invited us to reflect on how sad it was that end-of-the-year newspaper pundits had declared that “toxic” had been THE word for 2018

Could we do better for 2019? Almost certainly, and Malcolm has already launched his crusade for the buzz word for 2019 to be “altruism” – a word whose origins lie in “other than self”

This relates very well to the Rotary maxim of “service before self” -  just three simple words but with an almost daunting challenge - to most of us - to behave in a way that is challenging and that inevitably risks exposure to being exploited

A boorish member (your correspondent as it happens!) asked whether this concept would extend to Malcolm’s beloved Manchester City allowing the opposing team to win on the odd occasion, for the greater good, but this clearly seemed to be a bridge too far!

Rotary thanks both Malcolm and his wife Alison for their friendship and company
