Seagate Rotary’s speaker on Monday was Christine Speedwell, from North Ayrshire Young Carers Centre. This charity is focussed on providing support and advice to young people aged 8 to 18 who have responsibility at any level for caring for a family member, friend or neighbour. This may be by one to one discussion or group activities where young carers may meet up with others in the same situation. There are several groups in North Ayrshire, for different age ranges from primary to sixth year, meeting once a fortnight.
The charity is also in the middle of a programme to make schools more aware of the problems young carers may experience with their home duties affecting their timekeeping or school work. Young Carers is one of the charities being supported by Seagate Rotary’s Christmas Trees project in the Portal during December. Christine answered questions about aspects of her work, and a Vote of Thanks was proposed by Andy Slater.
