Prestwick Rotary Club and Symington Rotakids
Symington Rotakids is an exciting venture between Symington Primary School and the Rotary Club of Prestwick to enable the pupils to form a mini Rotary Club. This Club was formed last year with 12 children from P3 to P7 with such high expectations that 65 pupils applied for 12 places. A President was elected together with 2 Secretaries, a Treasurer, Public Relation Officers and Project Officers.
A similar process is taking place this year and enthusiasm from the children is as great as ever. Already projects are being discussed and one idea is for the children to make ‘worry boxes’. These boxes can be used for written down thoughts/drawings that the children have on issues which are important to them. Another project will be internationally based.
Roseanne Smith, Depute Head Teacher, is a great fan
of Rotakids, and the initiative will be carried forward for this school year.
Projects last year included
collecting over 500 pairs of shoes for children and adults in Uganda, raising
over £150 for Sport Relief, and producing a school 50th Anniversary Bulletin.
Rotakids membership definitely helps pupils to develop leadership, team and project organisation skills. Prestwick Rotary Club President Edith Sterrick comments that "It is such a privilege to work with such a great school and such a fantastic group of children".
Prestwick Rotary Club is keen to widen its adult membership from the Symington/Craigie community. The Club is open to men and women from all backgrounds, and meets at The Parkstone Hotel, Prestwick, on Thursday evenings for talks and activities.
