History of Dreghorn - 10/09/18

Weekly Press Report

Seagate Rotary had an evening of nostalgia and reminiscence on Monday as member Davie Cousar talked about his bucolic childhood ranging free across the fields of Dreghorn and Irvine in the days before health and safety and the development of the New Town

Davie was brought up in Greenwood Farm, about where the TA centre now stands in Dreghorn, and with the help of old maps and photos he indicated the many old coal pits, mines and railways that abounded in the area now covered in roads, housing and modern industrial development.  It was all our yesterdays for some, and an interesting insight into life in the middle of the last century when the trains still stopped at Dreghorn and there were rowing boats on the river at Low Green and not a shopping trolley in sight.

There were many comments, clarifications and discussion from members who remember the Irvine area at that time, and a vote of Thanks was proposed by Eric Greig.
