Ayrshire Smugglers in the 18th Century
Photos show speaker Denis Rattenbury flanked by Edith and Stephen Cooper. Denis spoke eloquently about smuggling UK wide from the viewpoint of a retired banker turned historian. Much of the smuggling trade development can be traced to the collapse of the Ayr bank in 1772 and the subsequent hefty taxes on imported goods.
