Seagate Rotary’s speaker on Monday was Janis McDonald from deafscotland. Janis explained that the charity had recently rebranded changing its name from “Scottish Council on Deafness” to deafscotland.
She explained that currently around 12,000 people in Scotland had been born deaf , a further 355,000 became deaf through a variety of reasons BUT there was over 600,000 people in Scotland that were hard of Hearing. This equate to 20% of the population in Scotland. Sher also outlined the various initiatives that deafscotland were involved with to help improve “Inclusive Communication” for everyone in Scotland. Following a large number of questions, Alex McConnell proposed a Vote of Thanks.
Earlier in the day, Seagate Rotarian Ian Dickson and his wife Louise set off in their camper van to participate in the “Purple for Polio Rotary Grand Tour” Over the next four days they will be travelling across Scotland and heading down south through Manchester, Llandudno, Stoke on Trent, Coventry , Corby , Retford and Halifax before returning to Irvine. Rotarians from all over the UK are taking part in the tour to raise funds and publicise Rotary’s “End Polio Now” campaign
