2018 St George's Day Celebrations

A record turnout of crowds filled the High Street in the glorious sunshine for our annual festival celebrating St George.

Our annual festival of family fun and tradition celebrating Saint George’s Day took place in glorious sunshine on Sunday April 22nd.

This colourful event, organised by Pinner Rotary, was sponsored by Pinner estate agent Gibbs Gillespie.

With the church bells ringing, the Mayor of Harrow Councillor Margaret Davine led the Scouts’ Parade up the High Street to the War Memorial where they renewed their Promise. All divisions were represented, and District Commissioner Tyler Skerton handed out two long service awards.

The record crowds enjoying a day out in the sun took full advantage of the children's rides and entertainment including Punch & Judy, 'English Miscellany' folk dancers, 'Simply Gray' an old-time rock and roll band, a petting farm and face painting. A traditional ice cream van was in demand and stalls, local restaurants and the Queen’s Head all had a variety of food and drinks on sale. Sadly Susannah was unwell, so St George and Gusar the horse could not be there - they were sadly missed.

At 3pm the traditional Village Wheelbarrow Race careered through the streets from Little Common (just past the Police station) to Church Farm Green (opposite the Parish Church), bringing traffic to a halt and entertaining the enthusiastic crowds. When everyone had recovered the Mayor presented the prize to the winners, Steve and Dan representing the Queen’s Head. Calling themselves the ‘Tough Mudders’, they were the fastest team to negotiate the route through Pinner via the requisite beer drinking stops, while the team with the most outlandish fancy dress was ‘The Things’, also known as Donna and Amanda. Their prize was presented by champion boxer Matthew Elliott.

Event chairman Rtn Steve Morrisby said, “Today has been a great event for the local community and provided an opportunity for local organisations to raise money for their own good causes; I hope people have enjoyed themselves and I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this such a success.”

Thanks to participating stallholders and members of the public, Pinner Rotary raised over £600 for ORCHYD, a locally based charity for severely disabled children.
