The Presenter explained that the Rotary could support the children to
get the most out of their lessons by donating a backpack full of
the things they need. For many children, a Mary’s Meals backpack will be
the first gift they have ever received.
The presentation had a profound effect on the Rotary members and, in
response, a small team was set up to collect and donate 50 Backpacks
solely from members of the Club and their families to be sent to the
Charity before Christmas. This photo shows members of that team who
successfully met their target.
As many children receiving Mary’s Meals don’t have basic learning tools,
each Backpack contains such things as; a notepad, pencils, erasers,
crayons, a ruler, a pencil case as well as basic hygiene items like; a
towel, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, a skirt or shorts and a t-shirt.
Mary’s Meals are now feeding almost 1.3 million children every school
day. The alternative is that these children would have to work or beg in
order to survive.
In the New Year Buckingham Rotary Club, with local schools and
organisations, are intending to run a community project to donate as
many Backpacks as possible to Mary’s Meals to help the less fortunate
children across the world to attend school.
Buckingham Rotary raises thousands of pounds each year
for local charities, as well as supporting international initiatives. We
regularly meet socially and always welcome new members to join us in
the service of our local community and the wider world. For more
