Zach, 27, who is being hosted in the UK by neighbouring Baldock Rotary, is a former US army captain who played an active part in the fight to oust ISIS from Mosul and surrounding areas of Iraq in order to restore a semblance of normal life there.
His account of what was achieved and of his role was illustrated by his own photographs showing both the horrors of the ravaged city and the beauty of the Iraqi landscape where it had been less touched by war.
The result was an enthralling evening at which Letchworth Howard members also welcomed Bob Hemmings of the Baldock club.
Zach left Iraq in summer last year and is currently at King’s College, London, studying for his MA in conflict, security and development. He is also working with a business start-up in this country in the employment and training sector.
He is pictured (centre) with Dave Glanville (right), Letchworth Howard president, and Paul Jeffery, the club’s treasurer, who was steward for the evening.
