Rotary Friendship Hedge, Southill Woods - Dec 2017

A joint response from Rotary Beckenham and Rotary Langley Park to the challenge set by the President of Rotary International.

Southill Woods Tree Planting

On December 2nd, volunteers from the Rotary clubs of Beckenham and Langley Park planted 120 whips of five species of English tree to form "The Rotary Friendship Hedge".

We did this to help rise to the challenge made by Rotary International President, Ian Riseley, to "plant a tree for every Rotarian in the world".

The president challenged every Rotary club to make an environmental difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on July 1st and Earth Day on April 22nd 2018.

Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which slows global warming. “It is my hope that the result of that effort will be far greater than the environmental benefit that those 1.2 million new trees will bring,” Riseley said. “I believe the greater result will be a Rotary that recognizes our responsibility not only to the people on our planet, but to the planet itself.”
