On Monday evening President Eric Greig introduced another new member into Irvine Seagate Rotary. Pasan Gooneratne is a software and hardware design engineer, who has his own company in Irvine developing and manufacturing contactless ticketing and payment equipment for public transport and other applications throughout the UK
Speaker on Monday was David Atkinson from Renfrew Rotary, talking about the importance of a social media presence for promotion and publicity, both for businesses and voluntary organisations, and also the importance of being aware of the pitfalls and precautions necessary to protect personal information. Although some people are uncomfortable with the technology of facebook and twitter, properly used and controlled they can be a powerful counter to loneliness and isolation, particularly keeping older folk in touch with family and friends. It does not all have to be selfies with the latest meal on a girls’ night out. It was apparent during questions that some present were totally au fait and confident on these platforms, and others were highly suspicious and cautious.
A Vote of thanks was proposed by Sandy Niven. Next week will be Seagate’s annual Christmas party with Santa Claus Jim Anderson.
Seagate this year will be donating Christmas presents to needy children in our locality in conjunction with NAC Social Services and Barnardos. The photograph below shows some of the toys that will be distrubuted
