The Antiques Business - 23/10/17

The Seagate Rotary meeting on Monday started with a minute’s silence in memory of Hugh Drennan, who passed away this week.  Hugh was a long standing and respected Rotary member. 

Tuesday this week was World Polio Day, recognising the global effort that has gone in to tackling this disease.  Since Rotary started the campaign to eradicate polio in 1985, the number of cases has been reduced from 1000 a day to 1 a month, with the hope that it can be finally eliminated in the next few years. 

Speaker on Monday was Robert Watt, antiques expert from Stewarton.  Robert spoke with clarity, authority and enthusiasm using examples of porcelain and silver from his own collections, and commenting on and valuing pieces put forward from the audience.  Whilst some of the objects were impressive and decorative, but of little value, other seemingly nondescript items were worth significant amounts, demonstrating why specialist advice should be sought prior to buying or selling the family heirlooms.  After questions, a Vote of Thanks was proposed by Eric Greig.
