Global Scholar - Sept 2017

Jacob Khun from Jordan is the Rotary Global Student we will support this year.

Jacob Khuri - our new Global Scholar

Jacob arrived on September 16th and was welcomed at Heathrow by Charles and Adolph.

Jacob will be bag-packing with us on December 21st and will give us a talk after our Christmas Lunch.

Jacob is Jordanian. The many refugees in Jordan had an impact on Jacob and fed his ambitions.

His family moved to the USA when he was 16 - since when it can only be said that he has made the most of his opportunities, in ways which seem unavailable in the UK.

Jacob's principal interest is in improving public health in theThird World, for which he is currently studying at Imperial College. More on December 21st.

At our Christmas lunch on 21st December Jacob was introduced to club by Charles Wood. Jacob addressed the club and described his background and ahis hopes and plans for the future.

Jacob has a Bachelor degree in chemistry; and has researched into population related health issues; volunteered in the summer of 2015 at a refugee health clinic in Jordan; is studying at Imperial for a Masters in Public Health; and then he intends  to pursue a medical degree with a focus on public health and epidemiology, with the hope of pursuing a more holistic approach to medicine, with the intent of serving those who have been displaced worldwide - for the Rotary Goal of reducing the cause and effect of disease.

He has been doing well this term.  Recently received two merits and a distinction in his modules from last term, and  will be confirming a dissertation project sometime this week or the next.  He has also started looking into jobs in London as he is interested in gaining work experience in London for a year or so after his masters.

Jacob will be travelling to California to visit his family on 26th March and will be back in London on 25th April. He can attend the Beckenham Rotary Lunch on 26th April, and will bring the Club up to date on his studies and future plans.
Jacob found out this week that he was selected for an exciting dissertation project working with the World Health Organization this summer. The project is monitoring health services delivery in the WHO European Region. They require him to be in Almaty-Kazakhstan at the WHO European Centre for Primary Health Care, starting in May for at least 2 months. He might be back in London in July. So, he won't be able to attend the talk on 18th May, unfortunately.
