The speaker at Seagate Rotary on Monday was Sheila Smith from Troon. Sheila is a volunteer with Mary’s Meals and last year, in the company of Ian and Louise Dickson from Seagate Rotary, went to Malawi to see at first hand the work of the charity.
In Malawi Mary’s Meals supports 800,000 children with one or two meals a day which they get at school. Together they visited many parts of the country seeing this in action, and also saw some of the projects in the Mzuzu area where Seagate Rotary and other clubs in Ayrshire have been involved. These included a new school science lab part equipped by Seagate, water boreholes, bridges and solar lighting.
Sheila’s photos indicated the difficult living conditions in the rural areas, but also the enthusiasm and dedication of the local people to the food programme for the children and for their education. After questions, a Vote of Thanks was proposed by Pamela Lodge. Next week’s meeting will be an antiques valuation night to which partners and friends will be invited.
