THE ROTARY CLUB OF WELLINGBOROUGH
Visit to Sywell Aviation Museum on Monday 31 July 2017
Stewards Stuart Redman and John Holbrook had arranged a very interesting visit to the aviation museum at Sywell Aerodrome, and our guide Ben Brown told us about the history of the privately-owned airport, which was originally built by the Northamptonshire Aero Club and opened in 1928, and he showed us around the exhibits in the museum, which was opened in 2001 and is run by volunteers. After the visit there was a buffet supper at The Horseshoe in Sywell village.
At the beginning of the Second World War Sywell became the centre for Free-French pilot training, and many hundreds of exiled Frenchmen learned to fly there and joined the Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres (FAFL)
