Leighton Linslade May Fayre

Over the years since its inception with the All Saints Church, the Fayre has grown into the largest outside event in Central Bedfordshire and also stands as the first event in the Leighton-Linslade social calendar. Ever since its beginnings the aim of the Fayre have remained the same – to enable local and national charities and organisations to raise their profile with the people of Leighton Buzzard and surrounding areas and also, hopefully, to raise much needed revenue. This year it is reported that the various charities raised approximately £2,000.

To support the efforts of the various charities the Club organised a full entertainment programme including the ever-popular traditional Maypole dancing and music on the High Street, which saw a wide variety of dance styles from ‘20’s swing through rock-n-roll to kids Zumba and street-dance. Lastly was a demonstration of Tai Chi to help everyone “wind down”. One of the main displays on the High Street was a visit from the Diabetes UK display where over 130 people had their diabetes levels checked. This resulted in 40 being advised to visit their doctor so was very beneficial.

The main events though were in Parsons Close recreational ground where we arranged for the Knights of the Crusades who entertained the crowd with jousting and sword fights. There were also two displays of Falconry to keep the medieval theme. Amongst other attractions was an appearance of the 6^th Regiment Army Air Corp with a Lynx helicopter and their climbing wall. Due to our partnership with the MK Dons Sport & Education Trust, there were football training sessions running throughout the day and a number of local children have signed up for further training. The local Fire Brigade brought along one of their fire tenders, enabling everyone to get “up close”. There were also the usual fairground attractions of bouncy castles, charity stalls and food outlets.

The Club itself raised over £10,000 at the Fayre which, when added to the funds raised through the year, such as the Brain of Leighton Quiz and events around Christmas means that the Club has raised over £30,000 during the year. The Club’s main charity beneficiaries this year are the Chiltern MS Centre and Prostate Cancer Support but the remainder will be distributed to worthwhile local, national and international charities.
