Millicent Kaye Art Competition and Exhibition for Primary School 2017

With enthusiastic support growing each year among Oswestry's Primary Schools, the Rotary Club of Oswestry's annual Millicent Kaye Art Competition attracted over 350 pieces of artwork, either 2D or 3D, from 8 schools on this year's theme 'In The Park'.

At the competition prizegiving at Oswestry's QUBE gallery recently, a happy Woodside School group were presented with the Millicent Kaye Memorial Award for their school's outstanding overall effort.  There were individual successes from Moreton First's Miller brothers with Oliver's overall First Prize in the 2D and Commendation in the 3D categories whilst sibling Charlie was commended in the 2D category.  Our Lady and St Oswald's Saskia Dalietos scooped First Prize in the 3-D category with an impressive 3-D model of a bandstand.

Presenting the prizes, Oswestry Rotary Club President Elect David Davies thanked the youngsters for their hard work.  "It was all very evocative of spending an afternoon in the park - the pupils are all so talented!"  David thanked the competition judge Mrs Joan Turner for her dedication and enthusiasm for the competition. "Joan not only judges each year but thinks up the topic too.  I wonder what she will think of next year?" he added.

The competition and exhibition is sponsored by the Mary Hignett Bequest, a fund administered by the Rotary Club from half of the estate of Oswestry author Mary Hignett to fund local arts and sports projects.  It is pleasing that Mary and Millicent were friends and that this competition continues their mutual interests.

A selection of the winning and commended entries is on display in the Qube Gallery, Oswald Road, Oswestry, SY11 1RB from 9am-5pm each day until 3rd July so please do visit, have a look and put a smile on your face too!

The Rotary Club of Oswestry established this award in 1996 in honour of Millicent Kaye, who died earlier that year.

The Award is based on a competition which is open to all students in Years 5 and 6 at primary schools in Oswestry and the extended geographic boundaries set by the Club’s Community Service Committee. The competition is open also to home-educated children in this age group.

Prizes are awarded both to the individual artist and the school they represent. There is also an award for the school which has, in the opinion of the judge, made outstanding effort.

Each year the Club sets a theme for the competition which aims to be flexible and easily adapted to the curriculum. The theme for this year is “IN THE PARK”.

The prizes are sponsored by the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund, administered by the Rotary Club of Oswestry.

GUIDELINES

1.     The competition is open to pupils in Years 5 and 6 from schools situated within Oswestry and the extended area approved by the Community Service Committee.  The competition is open also to home-educated children in this age group.

2.     The work must be the pupil’s own work.

3.     The picture produced should not be more than A3 in size (approx.30cm by 42cm).

4.     The picture should be two dimensional but may be in ink, pencil, crayon, watercolour, oil or another medium but not computer produced or aided.

5.     A pupil may enter a piece of three dimensional art.

6.     Photographs – which form all or the majority of the entry will not be accepted.  Photographs which make up the minority of a piece of artwork maybe accepted – at the behest of the judge.

7.     All pictures should be clearly marked on the reverse side with the entrant’s full name and school address. Three dimensional art pieces will need to be accompanied by the pupil’s name and school address but not attached in such a way that it can be seen when the item is being judged. Please note that any entries without a name or address will be disqualified.

8.     All entries must be submitted no later than Friday 26th May 2017.

9.     The Rotary Club will appoint a Judge/Judges to judge both the individual entries and the school which in the opinion of the Judge/Judges has made the most outstanding effort and the winning school will be presented with the Millicent Kaye Memorial Trophy.

10.    If the judges consider a second school worthy of such recognition a runner up trophy will be awarded.

11.    The Prizes will be

a. Two dimensional art work

 For the best pupil - £50        with a prize of £150 to the pupil’s school.

For the runner up - £25        with a prize of £100 to the pupil’s school

For the third place -£10        with a prize of £50 to the pupil’s school

b. Three dimensional art work

 For the best pupil - £50      with a prize of £100 to the pupil’s school.
