Truk Lagoon - 14/11/16

Weekly Press Report

President Jim Fairgrieve started Monday’s meeting of Irvine Seagate Rotary with the pleasant task of presenting honorary membership to Donald Menzies.  Donald recently retired from active membership after many years of service including a year as President.

It was holiday snaps time again as the speaker on Monday was member Hugh Hutchison with photos and videos of his latest diving expedition.  His destination was Truk Lagoon, which was the major Japanese supply base in the Pacific.  60 ships were sunk in an American air attack in 1944, and most are still complete with their cargoes of planes, tanks and munitions still in place.

For comparison, the lagoon is about ten times the area of the main UK base of Scapa Flow, but with sea temperature 30 degrees, warm weather and sunshine making it well worth the 24 hour flight time.  As usual, the filming was of a high standard, with a comparable commentary.  A Vote of Thanks was proposed by Jim Anderson.
