A Rotary night in November to remember.....
Our Challenge Enterprise team and our Young Chef 2016
who fed us all....
Last Tuesday evening Kirkcudbright Rotary Club enjoyed a new experience when they sat down to their regular Club evening meal at the Selkirk Hotel. On this occasion the menu that was offered to all the assembled Rotarians was the same menu as used by fifteen years old Freddy McLaughlin – Clear in winning this year's local round of the Rotary Young Chef competition. Freddy, in winning this event that was held at Kirkcudbright Academy on October 6th, qualified along with runner-up Lauren Burgess for the Area Young Chef Final on the 15th November. The Rotarians were unanimous in their praise of the meal that they were served and they were very appreciative of the effort that Freddy had made working alongside the Selkirk Hotel kitchen staff to prepare two course the meal. Freddy's menu was crispy pan fried sea bass, served on a bed of spinach with sautéed potatoes and a home grown tomato sauce. For dessert, he served chocolate and hazelnut galette, with a dipped white chocolate physalis.
The meal was followed by a presentation from 18 years old Levi Goodare and 16 years old Ben Houfe, two Kirkcudbright Academy students who had recently returned from The Rotary Challenge Enterprise weekend staged in Larbert. The boys were sponsored by Kirkcudbright Rotary Club to attend the weekend course that is designed ''for those young people who have the ability and desire to become the next generation of business leaders.'' The boys gave a very relaxed and informal talk covering what the course involved and in particular they articulated how they learned to work with other young people, hitherto unknown to them. It was most pleasing for all those present to hear them acknowledge the learning that they had experienced over the weekend whilst at the same time expressing the gratitude they felt to Rotary for giving them the opportunity to attend such a stimulating and enjoyable experience.
