Funding Neuro - 22/08/16

Weekly Press Report

The Seagate Rotary hot dog stall at Marymass was well supported, despite the weather depleted crowds, raising funds for the club’s charity account.  On Monday evening Seagate made a donation to McMillan Cancer Relief.

Speaker at the Seagate meeting on Monday was Sharon Kane, from the charity Funding Neuro.  The charity supports very advanced research and clinical trials that allow direct treatment of brain tumours and brain degenerative disorders such as Parkinsons.   Conventional drugs and chemotherapy have limited effect within the brain as they are blocked by the protective blood brain barrier.

Using scanning linked to robotics, it is possible to insert micro catheters and drugs can be delivered directly to the treatment site.  There have been some encouraging initial results.  The talk was well received and there were many questions.  A Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dan Moriarty.
