Dementia Awareness - 09/05/16

Weekly Press Report

On Monday President Adam Moonie of Seagate Rotary presented a cheque for £500 to Michael Lafferty of the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.  This will enable the charity to provide a month’s stay in Ayrshire for a child from the radiation affected area, and is sufficient time in a clean environment to have significant and long term health benefits.

Seagate Rotary’s speaker on Monday was Graham Hart, talking about current thinking in the care of people with various types and degrees of dementia.  He outlined the many different services available, to support people at home , in day care and in care homes, and the importance of seeing these as providing people with a better quality of life.  He also discussed ways in which public and private spaces can be designed and improved to reduce visual confusion, and the training of staff in areas from supermarkets to public transport to understand and help people who may be confused or forgetful.  There were questions, and a Vote of Thanks was proposed by Robert McMillan.
