A taste of the celebrity lifestyle was enjoyed by one Trefonen couple last week.

Not only were John Davies and his wife Ali mobbed by fans – who actually turned out to be waiting for Paul Simon – as they visited the Radio Two studios in London, they met Jeremy Vine and were treated to a meal at a Michelin star restaurant.

However, the pair had to get their hands dirty first as part of their Children in Need prize to create an Elizabethan pie in honour of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death under the watchful eye of celebrity chef Nigel Barden at Pied a Terre, which was then tastetested by radio host Simon Mayo.

John, who last week admitted in the Advertizer his lack of culinary skills, said: “It soon became apparent that as opposed to peeling a carrot or two and dicing an onion, which I thought would be our role, we really were going to prepare the whole dish!

“Nigel said we had five minutes to familiarise ourselves with the recipe and then he and the other chefs wished us the best of luck and turned back to their other normal, day-to-day tasks. For one horrible moment I thought they might have assumed we were far more skilful than they thought, but then Nigel reappeared – he was brilliant and patient.”

The 67-year-old continued: “I thought everything was going very well until Nigel announced the only thing that remained to be done was to make the pastry and I was to do it. David Moore, the restaurant owner, said the pastry was delicious – praise indeed!”

Unfortunately, the couple’s slot on Simon’s Drivetime show was curtailed after the death of musician Prince was announced. But they rounded off their day with a return trip to Pied a Terre for a 10-course taster menu – and they even took the opportunity to introduce Nigel and David to Oswestry’s very own Stonehouse Brewery.

John added: “We had an absolutely wonderful time.”
