Monday’s meeting of Seagate Rotary was a club business night. John Brown reported that the club’s race night, held on Friday at Bogside, had raised over £650. This will go to the local Chernobyl Children’s charity which provides respite holidays and care for children suffering from the continuing effects of radiation in Belarus.
It was also reported that the worldwide Polio eradication campaign, promoted by Rotary over 30 years ago, is gradually reaching its goal of a Polio free world. So far this year there have been only 6 cases reported, 1 in Afghanistan and 5 in Pakistan, about a third of the number at the same time last year. When the campaign was launched Polio affected over 1000 children every day.
