On Saturday a number of Seagate Rotarians had a gentle cultural tour of Glasgow, taking in the mediaeval townhouse of Provands Lordship, a visit to a venerable tavern and the old Fruit Market. This Saturday they will be getting more extended exercise from Irvine Harbour to Ardrossan. With a strong southerly forecast, this should be the right direction to tackle this section of the Clyde Coastal Path.
The history of Irvine Harbour was the subject at Monday evening’s meeting. Alastair Weir gave an illustrated talk on the history of the harbour, from the earliest maps of the 1600s to the demise of industry and the rail links in the mid 1900s. One subject he mentioned was the possibility of an archaeological survey of the presumed site of the old harbour at the foot of Seagate. In order for this to go ahead it needs the backing of a local interest group to facilitate access to funding. With many old Irvinites in the audience, there were questions and opinions on many aspects of the talk, and a Vote of Thanks was eventually proposed by Jim Anderson.
