Massive Fireworks Display thrills the Crowds

It's probably the biggest firework display in Essex, once again superbly organised by Billericay Round Table, and supported by members of our club and all the other service organisations in the town.  Rotary Club of Billericay Mayflower, and the Lions were there, as well as numerous other volunteers.  The event is held in the grounds of Lake Meadows Park, Billericay, which provides a magnificent backdrop over the lake for the grand display.

An early start at 4.30 p.m. for the safety briefing, the out to the Hillhouse Road entrance gate to the Park for our appointed station.  James, Ed, Mike Sinclair and Peter Greene were all there on the evening.  We’re always happy to help because it’s a good cause, it gives enjoyment to thousands, and it’s a lot of fun on the night!

The process was superbly organised with over 8,000 tickets being sold on-line before the event, so many customers were able to walk straight past our pay station and have their tickets scanned prior to entry into the Park.  For those who hadn't pre-paid, we were able to take their money, and issue tickets on the night, but thanks to the prepayment, the load was much more evenly spread out than previous years.  Yes, there were peaks in demand, especially in the final half hour before the fireworks started, but otherwise we were able to minimise the queues and pass people through very quickly.  It was certainly a challenge, as thousands of revellers came to enjoy the fun, but, somehow .... everybody was processed, and nobody missed out on the entertainment.  Everybody was in a good mood and there was no trouble at our gate at all.

As well as a huge bonfire and a huge firework display again this year, and even a special Kid’s Firework Display at 5.30 p.m. so that the youngest could enjoy the event before the lighting of the bonfire and well before the main Firework display at 8.00 p.m.  There was the usual roadshow provided by Heart, and a variety of food and drink was available on site throughout the evening to feed the hungry masses! 

 The event was a great success, but with so many people it was even more difficult to move along the paths within the park than last year.

The firework display always raises significant funds over the years (last year £48,000) and these funds go back into the local community in the form of donations and grants to local groups, voluntary associations, charities and individual worthy causes.
