I hope you will be able to join us at Health Awareness Day on Saturday 23 April. This year’s event will be radically different from those we’ve run before, so I’d like to tell you more about it.
THEN
The event originates from a National Stroke Awareness Day organised in April 2003 by The Stroke Association and Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. It was that year’s main community and vocational service project of the President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland.
Since that time, Rotarians and representatives from the Stroke Association have been saving lives by hosting annual blood pressure testing events in their local communities around the country. Members of the public can have their blood pressure checked free of charge at local venues in a bid to raise awareness of the link between high blood pressure and strokes. Each year, hundreds of Rotary Clubs all over Great Britain and Ireland have been making use of local facilities such as church halls, shopping centres, libraries and leisure centres to carry out the free checks, assisted by health professionals and the Stroke Association, who provide information and advice on stroke related health issues.
NOW
In Oswestry, we have been working for some years to broaden the coverage of the events, as we’ve realised how valuable it can be for members of the public to see at one time and in one place the work carried out by the many organisations providing advice and support to the local community on health and related issues.
By moving this year’s Health Awareness Day on 23 April 2016 from the Memorial Hall to the much larger space available in the Library, we have the opportunity to make this really come true for the first time. Several hundred people visit the Library every Saturday, so we’re expecting our event to benefit many.
As you can see from the poster below, with major new contributions from the Library itself, Derwen College and many other organisations, our venue this year means we can present displays and activities relevant to all age-groups. There will be other exciting things going on in addition to those shown on the poster – come and find out for yourself (and bring a guest) any time between 10.00am and 2pm on April 23rd!
