It may only be September, but Seagate Rotary have commenced their collection of canned food, a few tins a week from everybody, for their annual ‘Can for Gran’ distribution of Christmas hampers. The clairvoyant evening, with Sally Buxton at Marress, is confirmed for Friday 6 November, and details are on facebook.
Seagate’s speaker on Monday was member Eric Greig, who gave a fairly technical but very comprehensible talk on the working of the human ear. His very strong message was that loud noise, be it from discos, headphones or chainsaws, causes damage to hearing. Unlike many other parts of the body, this is irreversible and permanent. His talk prompted many comments about working in factories and shipyards, in the days before hearing protection was mandatory, and the resultant need in later life for hearing aids. A Vote of Thanks was proposed by Donald Menzies.
