A community playing field, which was once branded 'disgraceful', has been transformed into a pitch suitable for a local football team.

Morton playing field, located just outside Oswestry, became the centre of a dispute last Summer between the wardens of Morton Church, who oversee the maintenance of the field and the Morton Playing Field Committee who were disappointed with the state of the overgrown field.

However, a group of dedicated volunteers have transformed the playing field which is now used weekly by The New Saints girls team.

Chairman of the committee, John Killick said their relationship with the church has improved and the field is now in great condition.

“We have had support from the church and had volunteers cutting the grass and improving the land, “ he said. “There is now a contractor doing regular cuts and rollings. I am very happy with the field but would like to see even more improvement because there is some rabbit damage.”

The group received £450 from the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund and £400 from Shropshire Town and Rural Housing, for which Mr Killick said he is “eternally grateful.”

He added: “We are hoping to go for more funding to sort out the rabbit damage and install toilets for the football team to use.”
