President's Prattling ...

Last Thursday I visited the Rotary Club of Norwich and met up with two enthusiastic "20 somethings" whose energy was boundless. They were inspiring to say the least because all of this energy is being channelled into doing good in the community and encouraging other young people to join together to make a difference. it left me feeling proud of Rotary and encouraged that we are a solid organisation with ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

The other heartening thing is that as we start the new Rotary year we have only lost a couple of founder members who have found even an eClub challenging with the other pulls in their life. They have left on good terms and we wish them well and they will always be welcome.

it is important in the next few months to seek to find out what you want the club to be like and what we can all do to strengthen our purpose and enjoyment.

Club Happenings ...

Exciting times for our younger members - Becky is looming up towards becoming a mother. Keiko has started to work for Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations in Japan, providing info on hunger. Chihiro is doing an internship until the end of September back in Japan and seol has just been over to enjoy her graduation ceremony for her studies at the UEA.

A new year in rotary means that we can thiink about the things we want to achieve ... please make comment at the end of this page :-)

This Week's Speaker ... 22nd July

We had a most pasisonate and thought provoking talk from Martk Little, who set up the Rotary Action group on child slavery and he takes us through a harrowing journey of what is happening to vulnerable children and adults in this difficult area.

Based around a poem by Simon Armitage, another short film gives a chilling insight into the horrors of child trafficking. Every year, worldwide, an estimated 1.2 million children are "trafficked" into prostitution, domestic slavery or other exploitative labour. >> https://youtu.be/ayg8NriNEdU

Nigeria marks polio-free year, raising global eradication hopes | Reuters

Nigeria marked its first year without a single case of polio on Friday, reaching a milestone many experts had thought would elude it as internal conflict hampered the battle against the crippling disease.  It means the country could come off the list of countries where polio is endemic in a few weeks, once the World Health Organization (WHO) can confirm that the last few samples taken from people in previously affected

This week, we can also add to the meeting a short video introducing Rotary International’s president for 2015-2016, Ravi Ravindran of Sri Lanka. Prepare for some rather stunning views of this beautiful country while hearing an open and inspiring message from this impressive Rotarian.

What is bit.ly? - Bitly - The Power of the Link

we often want to share a URL [the bit in the address bar at the top of your browser] but find it is long and clumsy. Using Bitly means you can shorten that URL and copy & paste it into any communication like email, tweets, Facebook posts etc .... once you are used to it you can sign up to bitly.com and edit the bitly short URL to suit your needs .. watch out for this next time.
