Lowther Park provided a beautiful autumn backdrop to Sunday’s 10K Penrith Rotary Club Trail Run and 4K family fun run which attracted 250 runners. A feature of this year’s event was a record number of children and families who took part in the fun run on a specially designed course.Courtesy of Lowther Estates Trust the main adult course took the runners from Hackthorpe Village Hall along the Deer Park to Whale, before turning alongside the river towards Lowther Castle, Newtown then back through parkland to Hackthorpe.

First man home was Jon Fletcher from Border Harriersin a time of 36:37 mins; Ross Landon also from Border Harriers was second in a time of 37:36 mins. Charlie Lowther of Eden Runners was third in a time of 38:46mins.

The first women home were Heidi Dent, Howgill Harriers, first in a time of 41:42 mins; second was Karen Bridge 45:10 mins and third was Suzanne Toppin in 46:32 mins.

Winner of the under 16yrs Fun Run was Robert Askew, Helm Hill Runners (16:28), 2nd was Martha Richards Ullswater Community, (17:04) and3rd Jodie Gillon (17:40)

During the presentation ceremony the race organiser Rotarian Tim Southorn, thanked all participants, organisations and individuals who helped to make the event possible including Penrith Soroptomists and Penrith Inner Wheel. Alan and Kathleen Conway provided first aid cover.

Prince’s Water from Armathwaite provided complimentary water, Heaton’s Stationery did the printing and a special thank-you goes to Jenkinson’s Forest Products who provided extensive support including the event tee shirts.

Well over £2000 was raised for the wide ranging charities and good causes that Rotary supports. Recent club donations include Eden Hospice, Eden Mencap, Mountain Rescue, Air Ambulance and the Calvert Trust. Further afield Rotary helps to provide bespoke survival tents at the scene of natural disasters across the world. For many years the club also helps the global effort to rid the world of polio.
