Oswestry Community Games, Cae Glas Park 12.00-4.00pm

Sun, Sep 21st 2014 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

This year's event has more diverse activities taking place and more local organisations including schools on board with the Derwen College and North Shropshire Special Olympics, and Cricket Federation for Disabilities, making the event truly inclusive.

Although not a Rotary event, members and browsers of this website may like to know that this event is taking place in Oswestry just one week after the Rotary District 1180 Fun Disabled Games in Chester.

Oswestry Community Games
Cae Glas Park - Sunday 21st September 12pm - 4pm

The Oswestry Community Games Cae Glas Park event promises to be even bigger and better than last year's pilot games which drew in around 500 people. This family FUN event is free for everyone to attend and take part in 'have a go sessions' and see the amazing activities that are on offer in Oswestry all year round  for all ages and abilities. What is truly important is that everyone who takes part on the day in whatever activity enjoys it and continues to do so regularly afterwards, so it is vital that these opportunities are provided at a local level.

Clive Knight the Games Organiser said  "This year's Games preparation has gone well, and we have more and diverse activities taking place with many more  local organisations including schools now on board. I am particularly delighted to welcome Derwen College and North Shropshire Special Olympics, and Cricket Federation for Disabilities, to make the event truly inclusive. Having the support of Oswestry and District Arts Association and Fusion Arts will increase the cultural side, and broaden the overall appeal.  I am also delighted to welcome Nick Beighton - Paralympic 2012 rower from Shrewsbury -  as our guest of honour.

"Nick was serving in Afghanistan in 2009 when he was severely injured when on night duty, losing both legs above the knee, and broke his pelvis. He started rowing because he wanted to do something completely new and to prove to himself that he could achieve.

"Nick and his rowing partner Sam Scowan were 4th in the Trunk and Arms Mix Double Scull at the London 2012 Paralympic Games; only 0.21seconds outside of a medal. In May 2014, he undertook a world first attempt to travel from Land's End to John O'Groats in a straight line in aid of BLESMA, the limbless veterans. Beeline Britain covered 1400Km in 28 days by sea kayak, hand cycle and "by foot"."

Nick has selected a local Shropshire charity "Climbing Out" to support on the day. The charity works with young people facing life changing injury or illness.  To find out more, please go on http://climbingout.org.uk/

To find out more about the Games, look out for posters /flyers promoting it, as well as a display in Oswestry library at the beginning of September, and a FaceBook page has been set up - see above link.
