Meningitis Research - 18/08/14

Weekly Press Report

Despite the wind and rain on Saturday, the Dragon Boat racing was a big success for the 15 teams taking part as they were expecting to get wet anyway.  Winners were Ayrshire Police, and best dressed team the RNIB, and a lot of money was raised for the various charities each team was supporting.  At least the high wind suited the launch of the balloon race, and it will be interesting to see how far the winning balloon has travelled.  This Saturday, Marymass, Seagate Rotary will have their hot dog stall in Kilwinning Road, and back by popular demand will be crepes with various toppings.

Speaker at Seagate Rotary on Monday was Ashleigh Hunt, from the Meningitis Research Foundation.  Meningitis is a disease affecting the membranes around the brain and spinal cord and mainly occurs in young children and student age adults, although it may happen at any age.  It can have devastating after effects including blindness and deafness.  It is particularly frightening because it develops very quickly, within a few hours, and it is essential to get immediate medical help.
