Our speaker today was Ruth Allen and her dog Piper from the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
This charity was created in 1979 by Sir Bruce Bumble and his friends based at Lewknor Army Base as a way to help the circa 10 million people in the UK living with some degree of hearing loss, of which 1 in 6 are profoundly deaf. In 1982 it got its current name of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and local artist, philanthropist and dog-lover Millicent Kaye (PHF) brought the idea to Oswestry.
