Nov 2014 Speaker Hugh Hunt - Geo-engineering

Mon, Nov 3rd 2014 at 5:45 pm - 8:45 pm

Prof Hugh Hunt (University of Cambridge)spoke to us about Geo-engineering - Should we, can we engineer the climate ?
Speaker Host-Paul D

Hugh spoke entertainingly to us about the fascinating options of Geo-engineering that are open to the world when CO2 levels become excessive. He works with colleagues from Cambridge, Oxford and others to monitor the global condition comparing changes across the last million years.  He showed us impressive graphs of worldwide temperature fluctuations and predicts that within 20 years or so the Arctic ice will have disappeared because of Global Warming.  Burning fossil fuels is fast becoming too expensive for the health of the world for us to continue. His message was that the time for action has come and we must concentrate on a mix of alternative fuels like wind, tide and solar power - moving away from fossil fuels like coal and petrol.

Amongst our guests was President Tim Tucker (St Ives Club) who presented us with a generous cheque
