Young Carers project - Cambria - 2014

A weekend respite for young carers aboard Cambria, a wooden Thames sailing barge

The Young Carers Project

CAMBRIA

The Rotary Club of Beckenham for the third year running will be sponsoring two local young carers for a weekend break from their normal responsibilities. They will be part of a group of eight for a chartered sail aboard the Thames barge Cambria.

"Fun, inspiring, brilliant, challenging, an amazing opportunity"

These are just some of the words and phrases used by the young carers having had a weekend away on board the sailing barge Cambria.

There have now been many weekends where youngsters have been able to learn about sailing barges, develop their teamwork skills, increase their confidence and generally relax and have fun.

Cambria is a wooden Thames sailing barge, built at Greenhithe, Kent in 1906. She is famed as the last British registered vessel to carry a commercial cargo under sail alone and as such forms a unique part of our industrial and maritime heritage.

Young Carers in Bromley

This year the club has again used part of the money collected for local charities to provide fun events for young people who have to take on added responsibilities or worries because of their family situation.

This is the third year in which we have paid for two young people to join six others supported by neighbouring Rotary clubs for a weekend of sailing in the estuary on board the Thames barge "Cambria".

With the money left over, Carers Bromley will be taking about 34 young carers aged 11 - 18 to an evening of laser tagging.Perhaps next year we should put up a Rotary team in a challenge match, the result of which should provide them with a great confidence boost.
